My second international trip was to Playa del Carmen in Mexico. It was a business trip of sorts. I was working remotely, managing SEO for a UK based company. My boss, Oliver, helped me get a passport so that I could partake in the vacation and that’s when I learned to appreciate travel.
It was only my second time on an airplane and I was flying alone with plans to meet up at the airport. I was a bundle of nerves. My whole life I’ve been very shy, reserved, and sheltered. It was my first time doing anything on my own, and the nervousness and excitement took over all at once.

I went to see the ruins in Tulum, the pyramids in Coba, walked down the beautiful white sand beaches, and swam in crystal blue water. We ended up doing a self tour around Nohoch Mul, pictured above. It was so intriguing to see the rich ancient Mayan history. We even heard about Juego de Pelota, an ancient Mayan ballgame. Not only a game, but a sacred ceremony symbolising the conquer of night by day.
I was urged to try authentic Mexican dishes and I’m sad to report I didn’t enjoy it as much as everyone would expect. I ate Tex-Mex quesadillas for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, trying Mexican food in between meals. Honestly, it just wasn’t what I expected it to be. I can’t say it was bad, but as a picky person with a child’s palate, I was very reluctant. It was my only time travelling where I was immersed in a totally new culture. I’m proud to say, I am much more open to trying local cuisine and delicacies when I travel. I’ll tell you about the crazy things I’ve eaten while in Cambodia later on.
